Welcome to our その他 page

This is where we present information to you that does not belong in the other sections at our site. We wanted to discuss internationalization and Japan with you, but we did not have an appropriate place to put it. Hence this page was born. Now, only internationalization is covered, but we will undoubtedly be adding more to this page in the future.

Internationalization

We began, as we often do for difficult topics, by looking at our English-English dictionary. Internationalization was not listed; internationalize was. The definition was to make (something) international, and internationalize was defined as the noun derived from the verb.

Internationalize and internationalization are different grammatical forms, but they both have the same basic meaning. Talking about internationalization implies that Japan is not internationalized. Internationalized countries, by the very definition of international, are already internationalized.

Japan has very little discussion of whether Japan should be internationalized or not. While the pros and cons are discussed, Japan seems to be believe that internationalization is necessary, desirable, and in Japan's best interest.

At ALS, we believe in internationalism and the multi-culturalism that accompanies it, but we would like to present the topics below for you to consider. These are in no special order.

結婚式で
By Jason Regan (CC)
1. Improving English education in Japan
2. Improving education in other foreign languages in Japan
3. Being more sensitive to people from other cultures
4. Welcoming refugees
5. Accepting immigrants
6. Contributing to developing countries for their benefit
7. Realizing that people are different and do think differently
8. Accepting differences in different people and different cultures
9. Realizing that all cultures are different
10. Understanding that the advantages of internationalization require accepting the disadvantages too.

We hope you will think about these topics, some of which do overlap. Internationalization is a two way street which requires thought, understanding, and appropriate actions. As American activists often say, think globally and act locally.

We would like to close with a question:

Why is Japan so intent on internationalization?

Those of us at ALS have lived and traveled in over 50 countries. We do not remember hearing such discussions in other countries. Please note, however, that our experience is primarily in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. We have not traveled that widely in Asia.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts.
